Omega Announces New Seamaster Aqua Terra Collection

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra TeakOn January 12, 2009 Omega officially launched its new Seamaster Aqua Terra collection of watches for men and women. While the watch has not been completely overhauled, it does feature some nice upgrades from previous collections that most will find appealing.

The dial has been changed to what Omega calls the "Teak Concept" that features vertical lines meant to evocate the richness of wooden deck on luxury boats. Clearly Omega is going for the nautical feel, yet seems maindful of keeping it multi-functional for dressy, sporty or casual occasions.

The hands are now coated with white Super-LumiNova, which is intended to produce a stunning blue reflection in the dark. We haven't yet tried this out, but we have no reason to believe that it wouldn't produce such a nice effect. The crystal used on most Omega Seamaster watches alone produces beautiful blueish reflections.

Omega's biggest technological leap with the new Aqua Terra is the use of "Si 14" silicon springs. Traditionally, mechanical watches have a tendency of becoming less accurate over time because their metal springs are thrown off balance by shocks and magnetic disruptions. Since "Si 14" springs are made out of silicon, they are not as affected by such effects. This makes the Aqua Terra significantly more accurate over a longer period of time, particularly for chronometer functions.

All in all the new Aqua Terra would be a worthwhile addition to any collection, although pricing will be a factor for most people. Hopefully, vendors will be offering deals on the previous collection as they stock up on the new one. As of January 21, the watch has not made its way fully through the distribution chain to stores. Watch for this in the coming weeks/months.
